The Mokuzai totem

This Mokuzai totem is a melody in the weaving of traditions unveiled and of the cultures that harmoniously stand aside each other. Woven in the landscapes of Manipur by the Imas (mothers), this woven bamboo head passes from one family onto another as an envelope for presents when two souls tie knots and vow to spend an eternity in support of one another. Crafted by these women, the Manipur woven head crowns upon a wooden body wearing the art of Shou Sugi Ban (a Japanese technique of wood burning) and singing the narratives of its fibres.

In this humble fusion of the stories of foreign lands, lies the touch of every artisan’s soul. Traversing from the arms of one artisan to another, from the soil of one land to another, the Mokuzai nurtures the tales of imperfections and oneness.
